Sor (Sister) Juana Inez de la Cruz (born Juana Inez de Asbaje y Ramirez de Santillana, November 12, 1651 – April 17, 1695) was one of the most influential figures of the Mexican baroque period. An accomplished playwright and poet, she wrote a central document in the history of women’s emancipation, Respuesta a Sor Filotea (Reply to Sister Philotea, 1691), in defense of women’s right to knowledge. (P: Retrato de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. por Miguel Cabrea, 1750)In her early years she served as lady-in-waiting to the wife of the Viceroy of New Spain. In 1668 she entered the convent of San Jeronimo. She became well known for her intellect and she amassed a large library on science and the humanities. But officials of the Catholic Church eventually forced her to sell her library, insisting that she should be devoted to God, not the pursuit of knowledge.
Though we know nothing for certain about her sexual life, her passionate orientation is made clear in her poems, particularly those addressed to paintings of her friend and patron, the Condesa de Paredes (or Lísida).
