I have to warn you: this is not a romance and this is not for faint heart. Others have defined it a yaoi tale, but I'm not agreed with them. This is not either a yaoi tale. It's a very dark and gothic tale.Ono Suzue is a young medicine professor in a prep school of the late nineteen century in Tokyo. Duting the plot we have some glimpses of his childhood when he has followed his father in the Boshin War. He has seen to many thing a young boy never has to and he has built a world of his own in his head. And he drags Kawano Tomoji in this twisted world. Unfortunately for him Tomoji is only a simple soul, too innocent and not so smart to escape the clutches of Ono Suzue.
The slowly and inexorable journey of Tomoji through distruction is almost agonizing, so you will feel the end like a freedom from a jail.
This is only the first chapter of a series about Ono Suzue, a man so cruel that strangely you can't hate, because you continue to imagine him like a child in front of the senselessness of the war.

Oh...you read so fast! (^_^)
Date: 2007-10-29 09:08 pm (UTC)I agree the story is really a mixture of many genres. Yes, it has homosexual scenes, however like you said it is gothic too and no "happy ending" sadly.
Ono Suzue (when he was a young man in the USA) did fall in love once with an American named David Engelon who was part of the extrasensory perception experiment at Yale University (this experiment was a real historical event). That story is more closer to a romance I think (^_^).
Thank you for all the reviews you post (I've read many of them already). I will try to improve my writing style.
