Anne Carroll George was a former Alabama State Poet and cofounder of Druid Press, who has published four volumes of poetry, and she was been nominated for several awards, including a Pulitzer Prize.Anne wrote numerous short stories for literary magazines, before turning to the craft of mystery writing, for which she won a coveted Agatha Award. Her hilariously funny novels reflect much of her own experience.
Like her heroine Patricia Anne, Anne George was a happily married former schoolteacher living outside of Birmingham, Alabama, and she grew up with a cutup cousin who provided plenty of inspiration for the outrageous Mary Alice.
Anne passed away March 14, 2001 due to complications from heart surgery.
Anne was a Pulitzer-nominated poet. Keep an eye out for an anthology of her poetry, entitled The Map That Lies Between Us, New and Collected Poems, 1980 - 2000
Anne wrote a wonderful series of 'cozy' mysteries, more popularly known as The Southern Sisters Mysteries.
Anne published a wonderful novel called This One and Magic Life: A Novel of a Southern Family, in 1999. It's a touching story of life, and ironically of death and family. The novel was very special to Anne.
Ironically, Anne left with a mystery of her very own...her actually age! This is a point noted in various articles and memorials, even if recently it was stated that she was born in 1927.
