First of all, despite the title and the profession of one of the two men, a cop, this is not a thriller, but instead it’s a fully fledged romance, kisses, cuddle, tears and hot sex all included. It’s nice the way it starts, showing you two very different men, but with two things in common, being gay and alone. But this is not the story of two men who settle down with something less than love since they feared to be alone; this is a classical meeting Mr Right story.
Ben is handsome and kind, a big man with an even bigger heart, who was raised by a single father; but love was not something he lacked, and even when he came out to his father, he received plenty of it. Now he is alone, his father died and no one to share his big house and to fill the void he has in his heart. Ben is waiting for Mr Right, and so he hasn’t got serious with any of his previous lovers, since he knew they were not right. Yes, Ben is alone, but I didn’t find in him bitterness or envy for who has already found their soul mate, on the contrary, Ben is only waiting, patiently, for his turn.
Reece is an almost 30 years old full time bike messenger and part time artistic photographer; even if he would like for his part time job to be the main one he is aware that he has to pay the bill. A bit younger than Ben, nevertheless he is at the same point in life when one night stands are no more enough to fill the void in his heart. Maybe he is arrived sooner than Ben to that conclusion since he has profited more of all those no strings attached relationships, but he is still someone who is able to recognize true love.
As I said, Reece and Ben are different, Reece is more friendly and easy to go, Ben is more reserved and pensive, but they are alike when it counts, they both want to make work this affair, turning it in a long-term relationship. Sometime they are so perfect together, so sweet and smushy, that you could have a sugar induced coma near them, but the author is always ready to turn it with a funny gag, so that to prove she is aware she is pushing a lot on the romance button. The same Reece sometime is aware he is behaving more like a woman than a man, but I think it’s entirely possible that, when you find your true love, you can be a bit overwhelmed by the event, even if you are a man. And if you find strange that Ben is a perfect housewife, please remember he was raised by a single parent, no mother around, and so it’s more than normal he is able to take care of himself.
There is no drama, only romance in this novel, and yes, it’s definitely a romance, so yes, abundance of kisses, cuddle, sex and also some tears are not only expected, but a must.
