John Van Druten was an English playwright and theatre director. He began his career in London, and later moved to America becoming a U.S. citizen. He was known for his plays of witty and urbane observations of contemporary life and society. His 1951 play I Am a Camera, together with Christopher Isherwood’s short stories, Goodbye to Berlin (1939), formed the basis of Joe Masteroff's book for the Kander and Ebb musical, Cabaret (1966). Carter Lodge was van Druten's lover in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He lived mostly in the Coachella Valley at the AJC Ranch, which he and van Druten purchased in the early 1940s with Auriol Lee, the British actress and director. After van Druten and Lodge split, they lived part of the year together on the ranch with their new, respective, lovers, Walter Starcke and Dick Foote. Lodge managed the ranch, where they grew corn and tomatoes, and handled his own and van Druten's financial affairs very successfully. Van Druten is buried in the Coachella Valley Public Cemetery.
