One of the questions I often get asked when I'm talking to authors about Storm Moon Press is why they should choose Storm Moon over the other publishers out there. What they often mean in particular is, why they should choose such a small press over a more established, larger publisher. At that point, I usually smile and tell them that it has everything to do with taking a personal approach. There are some benefits to a small press that bigger companies simply can't offer.

Small Means Personal

At Storm Moon Press, we have a goal of keeping our operation small and personal. We're celebrating our 3rd Anniversary this month (January 2013), but we're still a resolutely small press without ambitions of becoming the next huge author mill. The reason behind this is keeping our business personal. When you e-mail Storm Moon Press, you are put into contact directly with one of the three owners. There are no intermediaries, you don't have to wait three months for a response, and there's no guess work if the information you're given truly comes from the higher-ups. Since it's just three of us in charge, you know that you're dealing with someone who can give you the answers you need, the help you require, or simply the encouragement to get through the process of publication and grow along the way. You won't be tossed back and forth between five different people before you get to the top of the chain. With Storm Moon Press, we personally handle all our business and are readily accessible.

Personal Means Individual Attention

Having such easy access to your publisher opens up the opportunity to truly be known by them. As one of the owners of Storm Moon Press (and especially as Marketing Director), I know every author's name that we have published and which books they have been involved in, including the anthologies we have put out. Each author is more than a number, more than a means to an end, more than some writing monkey that can be forgotten once the contract is signed.

When you sign with Storm Moon Press, you're part of the process. We never keep our authors out of the loop. You have a say in your cover art. You can take an active role in your editing, and if another opinion is needed, the owners are right there to weigh in and help decide what's best for your individual story. If you're a new author, we take the time to show you the ropes and answer your questions. If you're an established author, you still get all the same attention and support. Our goal is to be a publisher you love to work with, and that means treating each and every book we release with extra care.

Attention Means a Great Final Product

Because we invest so much time in each release we put out, you can be sure that the final product of all our collaborative hard work is going to be the highest quality we can manage. You've gone through the rigorous editing process, the artists have endeavored to give you the best cover art (and possibly illustrations) they can create, and we're dedicated to ensure the quality of the ebook and print production. When you really break it down, what Storm Moon Press is all about is putting out a quality product that you can be proud of.

Ultimately, even though Storm Moon Press is and will remain a small press, we still have something unique to offer. Our contract terms really favor the authors we work with, and we spend a lot of time on each individual story and each author we work with. Instead of being one of twenty releases scheduled for a given week, you're one of two, if not the only release that week. You get more of the spotlight, more of our time and dedication, and (we hope) the best publishing process you could ask for. All things said, we hope Storm Moon Press will continue showing readers and authors that, when it comes to publishing companies, it isn't the size that counts; it's the high quality of the books that does.

K. Piet is the Marketing Director of Storm Moon Press and the author of Other Side of Night: Bastian & Riley. Her new illustrated novel, Making Ends Meet, is now available from Storm Moon Press. K. can be found on her blog or on Twitter @k_piet.

Thanks so much for sharing. The old adage does hold true here, bigger isn't always better. Though in other ways...it can be better :)
