David Van Leer (December 26, 1949 – April 3, 2013)

Robert Miles Parker was an artist and San Diego preservationist whose whimsical ink drawings of Manhattan facades included 30 Broadway theaters in his cityscape book Upper West Side. In 1984, he met David Van Leer, a tenured professor, University of California at Davis, and author of The Queening of America. Moving to New York City, continuing careers, the dedicated couple lived bi-coastally: Van Leer commuting weekly from California for 28 years to care for Parker who had AIDS. Fifty weeks after Parker, the grieving Van Leer died. Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO) is a non-profit organization devoted to the preservation of the historic architecture and landmarks around the San Diego, California area.  Robert Miles Parker founded the organization in 1969 in San Diego, California. –Jack Fritscher

It's good that, despite AIDS, he had the chance to live beyond 70 and so he was able to share many of his works with the world.
