Philip Sassoon (December 4, 1888 – June 3, 1939)

Sir Philip Sassoon was a British politician, art collector and social host, entertaining many celebrity guests at his homes, Port Lympne Mansion, Kent, and Trent Park, Hertfordshire, England. His Ballets Russes-inspired dining room at Port Lympne with its lapis walls, opalescent ceiling, gilt-winged chairs with jade-green cushions, all surmounted by a frieze of scantily-clad Africans, suggests the outsider confidence of a Rothschild and of an openly gay man. His sister was Sybil Sassoon, who married the Marquess of Cholmondeley. He was a cousin of the war poet Siegfried Sassoon. One of his frequent guests was T. E. Lawrence "of Arabia“, a British Army officer renowned especially for his liaison role during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign and the Arab Revolt against Ottoman Turkish rule of 1916–18. The breadth and variety of his activities and associations, and his ability to describe them vividly in writing, earned him international fame as Lawrence of Arabia, a title that was used for the 1962 film based on his World War I activities. Sir Philip Sassoon never married and died in 1939, leaving his three houses to his cousin Mrs. Gubbay (born Hannah Ezra to E.D. Ezra and Moselle Sassoon). Mrs. Gubbay left the entire collection of the Trent Park estate to the National Trust and today it is on display at Clandon Park.
