Chris Hughes (born November 26, 1983) is an American entrepreneur who co-founded and served as spokesman for the online social directory and networking site Facebook, with Harvard roommates Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, and Eduardo Saverin. He is currently the publisher and editor-in-chief of The New Republic, after purchasing the magazine in 2012. In 2009 Hughes attended President Barack Obama's first state dinner with his husband Sean Eldridge, Political Director of Freedom to Marry. Hughes and Eldridge announced their engagement in January 2011 at a reception in support of Freedom to Marry. They married on June 30, 2012. The couple bought a $2 million residence in the 19th District of New York with the reported purpose of permitting Eldridge to run for the Congressional seat there. The couple was featured on the cover of The Advocate magazine's "Forty Under 40" issue in May 2011, and they were profiled in the New York Times in May 2012. Eldridge and Hughes announced their engagement in January 2011 at a reception in support of Freedom to Marry. They married on June 30, 2012 and reside in Shokan, New York. The couple met in November 2005 through a college acquaintance of Eldridge’s at a brunch in Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass. Eldridge was working as a customer service manager for a moving company in Somerville, Mass., and Hughes was a senior at Harvard, and already a founder of Facebook.

Hughes grew up in Hickory, North Carolina, as the only child of Arlen "Ray" Hughes, a paper salesman, and Brenda Hughes, a public-school teacher. He was raised as an evangelical Lutheran. He is a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. In 2006 he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts in history and literature.


Sean Eldridge is an American investor and political activist. He and his husband, Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, fund advocacy groups and Democratic candidates across the U.S. They attended Barack Obama's first state dinner in 2009. The couple was featured on the cover of The Advocate's "Forty Under 40", and they were profiled in the New York Times in May 2012. They announced their engagement in January 2011 at a reception in support of Freedom to Marry. They married on June 30, 2012.















Hughes was the coordinator of online organizing for Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign on My.BarackObama.com, the campaign's online social networking website. He was the subject of an April 2009 cover story in Fast Company magazine under the headline, "The Kid Who Made Obama President; How Facebook Cofounder Chris Hughes Unleashed Barack's Base - and Changed Politics and Marketing Forever."

In March 2009, Hughes was named Entrepreneur in Residence at General Catalyst Partners, a Cambridge, Massachusetts, venture-capital firm.

He is the Executive Director of Jumo, a non-profit social network organization which he founded in 2010, which "aims to help people find ways to help the world". In July 2010, UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS) appointed him to a 17-member "High Level Commission" of renowned politicians, business leaders, human rights activists, and scientists tasked with spearheading a "social and political action campaign over the coming year aimed at galvanizing support for effective HIV prevention programmes."

He is also an invitee of the Bilderberg Group and attended the Swiss 2011 Bilderberg conference at the Suvretta House in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

In March 2012, he purchased a majority stake in The New Republic Magazine. He is now the publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine.

In the film The Social Network, Chris Hughes is played by actor Patrick Mapel.

He is also a prominent advocate for environmental protection, LGBT equality and campaign finance reform. He and his husband, Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, fund advocacy groups and Democratic candidates across the U.S. They attended U.S. President Barack Obama's first state dinner in 2009. The couple was featured on the cover of The Advocate magazine's "Forty Under 40" issue in May 2011, and they were profiled in the New York Times in May 2012. He studied at Deep Springs College and then graduated from Brown University, where he helped organize the national Students for Barack Obama campaign in 2007. He then enrolled at Columbia Law School but left to join Freedom to Marry after the New York State Senate voted against legalizing same-sex marriage in the state in December 2009.

After the New York Senate failed to pass marriage equality in 2009, Eldridge joined Freedom to Marry, the campaign to win marriage equality nationwide. He served initially as Communications Director and then as Political Director, a role in which he helped lead the successful 2011 effort to legalize same-sex marriage in New York. He currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the group. Eldridge has debated opponents of gay rights on Fox News and ABC News Nightline. The New York Observer ranked him as one of NY's Top 50 "most powerful gay figures" of 2011.

Following the New York marriage equality victory, Eldridge founded the investment fund Hudson River Ventures in 2011 in order to "empower entrepreneurs and build thriving businesses throughout the Hudson Valley." The fund invests in promising small businesses in the region, with a particular focus on food & beverage companies. In 2013, Eldridge founded the Hudson Valley Advanced Manufacturing Center at SUNY New Paltz, which trains students and workers on the use of 3-D printing technology.

Eldridge serves on the board of directors of Scenic Hudson, "the largest environmental group focused on the Hudson Valley" and is a significant supporter of their climate change and waterfront protection programs In 2012, he launched Protect Our Democracy PAC and New York Leadership for Accountable Government (NY LEAD), a bipartisan group of business and civic leaders advocating for campaign finance reform in New York State.

Eldridge served as a delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention for NY-19.

In early 2013, he filed paperwork to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014, challenging incumbent Chris Gibson in New York's 19th congressional district.
