Frieda Belinfante was a Dutch cellist, conductor, a prominent lesbian and a member of the Dutch Resistance during World War II. After the war, Belinfante immigrated to the United States and continued her career in music. She was the founding artistic director and conductor of the Orange County Philharmonic. Her repertoire spanned all periods and media including works from the Baroque to contemporary living composers of the period, especially those working in the Netherlands and France and in particular her close association with Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans. Bosmans, a well-known composer and pianist, was the partner of Belinfante for seven years. She lived together with Belinfante, who was in love with her, and led a bohemian life. Frieda’s instrument had a central part in Bosmans’ early works. In 1921, she wrote the Trio for piano, violin and cello and in 1926 Impressions for cello and piano. Frieda performed the premiere of the Second Cello Concerto (1923), still marked by the broad lyrical lines of Romanticism. Things changed after Henriëtte met Willem Pijper, a respected composer and critic. The 1928 Concertino for piano and orchestra is a good example of this new direction.
