Owen Barnes’s life is finally going the way he wants. He’s making a living as an author, and his relationship with building surveyor Magnus Cassidy is going from strength to strength. When Owen finds a lump, he buries his head in the sand. He’s too busy for doctor appointments and besides, it’s probably nothing. He pushes concern away and is soon swept up in a whirlwind of distractions. His best friend’s husband is falling apart and Owen needs to be strong for them, not burdening them with his fears. He says he’ll deal with it when the new book is released, when Ryan and Sameer are more stable, when he’s done writing. Owen has a hundred excuses to hide one simple fact: he’s scared. Eventually Magnus drags him to the doctor, and the news isn’t good. Can Owen cope with the unexpected turn events have taken, or is his perfect life about to go balls up?

By mistake I read this book before reading book 1 (Dang it!) No worries, though. This was such an enjoyable read. At times, though, I wanted to throttle Owen for keeping secrets from Magnus, especially such delicate and dangerous secret. I understand why he didn't want to find out about the lump in his testicle. Denial is such a bitch. I liked the pacing of the story, the characters were folks we might actually know in real life out there, so to me, they were believable. As always, Kate did a great job with this one!

Balls Up by Kate Aaron was an engaging and refreshing read that follows the story of Owen and Magnus from Book 1 (Blowing It). Aaron has managed to create a new plotline that not only retains the characterization that we came to love, but also further their story with new pitfalls. What could have been a very melodramatic look at a serious medical diagnosis was handled with both care and consideration, with a hopeful air of the future. Together, Owen and Magnus approached this fight together, while looking forward to what might come. Great writing, great characters, and great continuation of the verse.
