All Cenric wanted was a necklace to gift to his lady love, in the hopes it might persuade her to actually become his lady love. Instead of love, however, Cenric is informed of her engagement to someone else, wakes up to find his house burning down around him, and is dragged away by a man who might have saved him, but won't say much about why one necklace has Cenric running away from someone willing to kill to get it back.
This was a very good story. The reader was quite literally taken on a journey with lots of twists and turns. My only negative is that the story between the two men seemed to take a backseat to everything else. I was personally left wanting in that regards. Very well done. Original. Creative. Intriguing. Detailed. Loved the dwarfs, but by the time we got to the capitol there were almost too many characters to keep track of. Author did a good job of trying to give each distinguishing characteristics, but a smaller scale may have worked better. Language was appropriate to the setting and characters. Readability was good. Imagery was well done. I felt very much a part of the story.
Here's an inspirational comment: A wonderfully engaging and remarkably in-depth strangers-to-friends-to-lovers fantasy tale. From the first line, I was hooked and fully immersed into this fantasy world that shows what it's capable of through subtle details embedded throughout the plot and the dialogue. Wickedly fun banter between the two spitfire characters, Cenric and Rylan, was awesome, and though this story is extremely light on erotic scenes, I felt the romance all the way down to my curling toes.
