Excerpt - Hell to Pay

The corner of a carton of pickled gherkins is digging into my back. I can’t see the writing on the carton since it’s nigh on pitch-black in here, but I know it contains pickled gherkins because I can smell the foul things. Even through the packaging, the stench is almost unbearable. I’ve never been a fan of pickled gherkins at the best of times, but after being boxed in by them for nearly nine hours I’m pretty much ready to blast every pickled-gherkin manufacturer in the world into smithereens; send them all to Hell where they belong. If I wasn’t on the run, I’d do it; don’t think I wouldn’t! But an act like that would draw too much attention, so I refrain and put up with the discomfort as best I can. Why don’t I move? Well, I can’t, can I? If I shift position by even a millimetre I’ll disturb Tom, and the sweet boy deserves a smidgen of uninterrupted slumber after the night we’ve had.
Tom’s head is resting on my shoulder, and his curls tickle my cheek as I angle my head a fraction to look down at him. Granted, I can’t see much in this gloom, but when he exhales I feel the gentle puff of air as it wafts over my shirt, and I know every inch of his body so well I can picture it even without a light source to illuminate that delectable form. To have him at my side—that’s worth the nightmare of this gherkin-infested ride.



About the author: NICKI J. MARKUS was born in England in 1982, but now lives in Adelaide, South Australia with her husband. She has loved both reading and writing from a young age and is also a keen linguist, having studied several foreign languages.
Nicki launched her writing career in 2011. She published works through Wicked Nights Publishing and Silver Publishing before both companies closed their doors. She is now self-publishing some of her works, including the novella Time Keepers and the fantasy novel The Ragnarök Chronicles.
