Excerpt:

An anxious, pain-filled sound erupted from Nicolae. The glow grew dark, and I could feel pain radiating from him. His breath changed, becoming more laboured. Fear turned to panic, its acid taste burning my stomach. This was nothing like what I had been doing before. This was meant to hurt, not to make a point. And whatever magic was being used to hurt Nic, it stunk to the skies.
My mind rebelled against the assault to my senses and fought to break loose. I locked my jaw and struggled to remain focused. Sean’s power brushed me, anchoring me.
The whimpers became less and less coherent, and I knew I had to intervene.
Nicolae’s sounds became strangled, his breath almost non-existent. Without thinking, I reached out and grabbed the cords. They burned my skin, but I held tight. Power boiled inside of me, fighting the pain I was experiencing and threatening my self-control. I let it rip, exploding in a protective barrier of energy. I pushed it out, moving down my arms to the point where the strings touched my skin. Coolness spread in its wake: a welcome numbness.
“Whatever you’re doing, you better hurry.”
I understood the need for haste. Behind the wall of power, my energy formed into a solid mass in the shape of a blade. I built up layer after layer of strength. When it felt as strong and as solid as a real blade, I shoved it through the wall. It ripped the strings. They disintegrated at the contact, falling through my fingers.
Nicolae cried out—a high, earpiercing shriek. The wards protecting the house vibrated like the taut leather of a drum under the stick, the reverberating tremors dancing over my skin. My eyes snapped open. The power receded, settling back inside me, and I fought to return to reality.
