James Whitney Fosburgh was an American painter and lecturer on art at the Frick Museum, perhaps most famous for his portrait of US President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, which is featured in full color on the cover of the November 5, 1965 edition of Life magazine, to accompany the memorial essay on the President entitled “A Thousand Days”. He is also the artist of the Truman Capote’s portrait exhibited at the New York Public Library on Bryant Park. He was a Yale-educated Manhattan artist and World War II Army glider pilot. Although homosexual, in 1953 he married the socialite Mary "Minnie" Cushing, whose first husband had been Vincent Astor. She was the daughter of Harvey Williams Cushing, a pioneer of brain surgery, the first person to describe Cushing's syndrome, he is often called the "father of modern neurosurgery.” He married Katharine Stone Crowell, a Cleveland childhood friend and had five children: William Harvey Cushing; Mary Benedict Cushing; Betsey Cushing, who married James Roosevelt and later John Hay Whitney; Henry Kirke Cushing; and Barbara "Babe" Cushing, the socialite wife of Stanley Grafton Mortimer and later William S. Paley. On 8 October, 1953, several weeks after divorcing his second wife, Minnie, Astor married the once-divorced, once-widowed Roberta Brooke Russell. According to an oft-told story in society circles, Astor agreed to divorce his second wife only after she had found him a replacement spouse.
