Director: David Lewis

Writer: David Lewis (writer)

Genre: Drama, Romance

Tagline: Some loves stand the test of time

Plot: An unfulfilled gay man in a stagnant relationship finds his life changed forever when he meets a struggling writer visiting the Redwoods Country.

Both original and incredibly romantic, Redwoods tells the story of an already-partnered man whose love is tested when a mysterious drifter passes through his small Northern California town. Everett (Brendan Bradley) and Miles (Tad Coughenour) are in a comfortably platonic relationship, which is held together by raising their son. While his family travels out of town, introverted Everett finally has time to himself—that is until Chase (Matthew Montgomery), a strikingly handsome writer, pulls up in front of his house. Shot amidst ancient redwoods, David Lewis’ (Rock Haven) film is a stunning ode to the power of love.

Shot in the gay Russian River resort town of Guerneville, David Lewis' new film is leagues more polished than his debut feature, Rock Haven and it's got even more soul, if that's possible. Redwoods will suck you into its warm cinematic womb and won't let go.

Redwoods is for sure a romantic movie, maybe a bit on the sad side, but often the best love stories have a high dose of drama. I like both men in the story, Everett and Chase, but maybe Chase is the more open, the one who dares much. Everett is a bit too much pampered, comfortable in his little secluded paradise, if not for Chase's coming, he would have probably never questioned his life and his desires. Matthew Montgomery here, once again, borrows his face and art to give a picture of a not ordinary gay character for an indie movie that, neverthless, preserves an high quality in the delivery.

This looks like a winner -- does it also have an uplifting ending. If so, I'll buy it... no need for subtitles. LOL

If for uplifting ending you mean a "full" happily ever after, then, it's not exactly like that. But it's for sure an ending that, in a way, is a proof of the strength of love. If you have seen the previous movie by the same director, Rock Haven, well, the ending is on the same line. Elisa

It sounds like it's definitely worth viewing.

Thank you.

Hi Elisa I saw this based on your recommendation and it was exactly as you said. It is sweet, a little sad and Matthew Montgomery is the best part of the movie. It's a beautiful setting but I found the other lead Everett kind of odd and the ending somewhat ambiguous.

I'm left wondering what happened over those 5 yrs and what happened the last time they met so that Everett stayed. I wish the ending hadn't been left hanging!

Unfortunately I think the ending was that Everett didn't reach Chase 5 years before, and he was waiting to meet him again. But life went in the middle, and now Everett has only memories, good memories, but maybe not enough to warm him up in real life. Above all since, in the end he broke up with his partner, probably hoping in a relationship with Chase. Yes, it's for sure a not Happily Ever After, but it's also a very romantic movie, I think romance lovers will like it, even if they will cry for most part of the movie.
