Behind the Cover: Joanie Schwarz
Aug. 7th, 2010 11:31 amJoanie Schwarz has been known in the publishing world for over 25 years for the dreamlike quality in her painted and photographic imagery. Her work has appeared in Time Magazine, US News and World Report, Playboy Magazine, and she had created hundreds of book covers for Simon and Schuster and Scholastic books, as well as three childrens books of her own. Joanie’s work has hung at the Society of Illustrators in NYC for numerous shows over the last 20 years, and her original paintings and photographs are in private collections throughout the world.
Graduating with high honors from Syracuse University with a BFA in Illustration and Photography, Joanie continues today to study, taking workshops in lighting and printing techniques throughout the year. She is a life long learner and knows that connecting with other photographers is so important for feeding the creative soul. Knowing intuitively how to make people and kids feel comfortable, Joanie is aware that that is not enough- LIGHT is the key to making a beautiful portrait. She has studied advanced natural lighting techniques as well as studio lighting with Roy Thomas of Black Dog Photography at NJCVA and is looking forward to her first workshop with Joyce Tennison in August 2008.
Joanie is a member of ASMP. She is honored to have been approved as a volunteer photographer for Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a non profit organization that helps parents deal with the loss of a newborn by offering their services free of charge.
