In recognition of Veterans Day and to celebrate LGBT Veterans the Center looks at the issue of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and LGBT servicemembers.

...Scheduled to read are:
Rich Merritt – Former Marine Corps Officer, he was featured on the cover of the New York Times Magazine on June 28, 1998, in an article titled: “Uniforms In The Closet: The Shadow Life Of a Gay Marine.” He is the author of “Secrets Of A Gay Marine Porn Star” and “Code of Conduct.”

Brett Edward Stout – Former Marine Corps NCO, he joined the Marine Corps at the age of 18 where he studied Russian at the renowned Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. After attending a secondary school in Texas he was stationed at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base, Hawaii as a Russian cryptologic-linguist and weapons marksmanship instructor before being honorably discharged in 2002. He is the author of “Sugar-baby Bridge.”

Evelyn Thomas – Former Marine Corps NCO, she was a Baker in Marine Corps. She was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California and went through an investigation in 1991. She was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. She is the author of “Does Butch Nappy Hair Offend You? One Teacher’s Struggle for Acceptance in the Professional World of Education.”

Justin Crockett Elzie – Former Marine Corps NCO, In January 1993 he came out on ABC Evening News and was the first Marine and servicemember in the United States military to be discharged under Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and later reinstated where upon he served 4 years openly gay from 1993 to 1997 when he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. He is the author of “Playing By The Rules.”

At the end of the readings by the authors there will be a discussion panel taking questions from the audience on everything from; the gay subculture in the military, the current policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, to what the future looks like beyond repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Former Army Captain Tanya Domi, now an Adjunct Assistant Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University will moderate the discussion

Come out and hear the stories and the discussion on the current events surrounding Don't Ask Don't Tell from those who have lived it and are currently involved in the advocacy of repeal of DADT.
